Quick Facts: Hurricane Season Preparedness

The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season is underway, and a few simple steps can ensure you and your family are protected. An insurance agent can help you review your policies and determine what’s covered and what’s not. Remember a homeowners policy does not include flood insurance. You can purchase a separate flood insurance policy through a local agent or the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). There’s a 30-day waiting period before the policy goes into effect. Before a tropical system threatens, make sure your hurricane preparedness plans include the following:

Create a home inventory. Take an inventory of clothing and valuables. It’s also a good idea to take pictures or video of each room and the exterior of your home.

Gather important documents. Have copies of your family’s essential documents and your agent’s contact information.

Protect your health. Review your health insurance policy to become familiar with what you should do in the event of an emergency. Identify your network hospital. Find out from your provider what coverage your plan provides when you are displaced and need medical care outside of your area.

Visit our hurricane resource center or watch our hurricane season preparedness videos for additional information.

Medicare Following a Disaster

Medicare guidelines can change for beneficiaries following a declared emergency or disaster. Beneficiaries are advised to check a plan’s website or contact the plan directly to determine if there are temporary changes to rules during an emergency. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Keep your prescriptions in original containers and make sure they are properly stored.
  • Find out if your doctor will give you a written prescription for any important medications you may need to fill.
  • Contact your insurer to find out if you can fill a prescription early in the event you are displaced.
