After the Storm Resources

The Louisiana Department of Insurance offers the following guidance to policyholders with tornado damage following severe weather:

Contact your insurance agent as soon as possible. Have your policy available if you need to file a claim. Find out whether the damage is covered under the terms of your policy. If you need help or have questions, contact the Louisiana Department of Insurance.

Minimize your losses and document the damage. Take photos of any damage and then make whatever reasonable temporary repairs are needed.

Keep your receipts. If you are unable to stay in your home due to damage from a storm, keep your receipts for lodging, food and essentials. Your policy may cover a portion of the costs while you are temporarily relocated.

Read your policy. Even if you have full coverage, you still have an obligation to mitigate your damage by taking actions such as putting a tarp on your roof and boarding up broken windows.

When an adjuster visits your property, make sure you ask for identification. You can call the LDI or visit our website to verify his or her licensure.

If you have questions about your policy, contact the department at 1-800-259-5300 or visit www.ldi.la.gov.

Flooded houses

Quick Facts: Flood Insurance

The tornadoes that touched down in Southeast Louisiana in March are a reminder to evaluate your insurance needs. Flood insurance is especially important to consider this time of year. Flooding can happen unexpectedly, and homeowners insurance does not offer protection against flood losses. Flood insurance is available from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) as well as private insurers, including surplus lines insurers. There is a 30-day waiting period for NFIP policies to take effect. The LDI can answer basic questions about flood insurance, but the department does not regulate the NFIP, approve its rates or changes. Click here to watch a video to learn more about the importance of flood insurance.

Dangers of Distracted Driving

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Distracted driving takes your focus off the road and has deadly consequences. Here are a few safe driving tips:

Pay attention to the road. Distracted driving is dangerous and frequently causes deadly accidents. Limit your distractions, and never use electronic devices to text or surf the web while driving. Drunk or drug-impaired driving, speeding and drowsy driving are dangerous.

Buckle up. Seat belt use is one of the most effective ways to save lives and reduce injuries after a crash, yet thousands die each year as a result of being unrestrained.

Follow the speed limit. Obey all speed limits and watch out for hazardous road conditions.
